Understanding the Treatment
What Are Biostimulators?
Biostimulators are injectable treatments designed to stimulate your body's own production of collagen.
Unlike treatments that rely primarily on the injected material to create immediate volume, biostimulatory treatments work in part by encouraging the skin and underlying tissues to produce new structural proteins over time.
Collagen plays an important role in the strength, structure and appearance of the skin. As we age, collagen production naturally declines, contributing to changes in facial volume, skin quality and support.
At Treasure Valley Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa, we offer two injectable biostimulator options: Sculptra® and Radiesse®. Both stimulate collagen, but they are different products with different characteristics. Your provider can help determine which approach best fits your anatomy, skin quality and aesthetic goals.
Collagen-stimulating
Rather than relying entirely on injected material, biostimulators encourage your body to produce its own structural proteins.
Gradual and natural
Because the improvements develop through a biological response, results can look particularly natural over time.
Individualized
Sculptra and Radiesse have different characteristics. Treatment is planned around your anatomy, skin quality and goals — not a one-size protocol.
The Process
A Different Approach to Facial Rejuvenation
Treatment
A biostimulatory product is strategically injected based on the patient's anatomy and treatment goals.
Collagen Stimulation
The treatment stimulates the body's natural regenerative response and encourages new collagen production.
Gradual Improvement
As collagen develops, improvements can become more apparent over time.
Biostimulation is about more than simply adding volume.
The objective is to work with the body's own collagen-producing processes to support gradual, natural-looking rejuvenation — not to fill a space with an injectable material and be done with it.
Our Biostimulator Options
Sculptra® & Radiesse®
Poly-L-Lactic Acid Biostimulator
Sculptra®
Gradual Collagen Stimulation
Sculptra is an injectable biostimulator made with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). Rather than functioning primarily as a traditional volumizing filler, Sculptra works by stimulating the body's natural collagen production.
Improvements develop gradually as collagen is produced over time, making Sculptra particularly appealing to patients who prefer progressive, natural-looking rejuvenation.
Depending on the patient's anatomy and goals, Sculptra may be considered when addressing concerns related to age-associated facial volume changes and loss of structural support. A treatment plan may involve multiple treatment sessions.
Sculptra's primary aesthetic effect is gradual — patients should not expect their final result immediately following a single treatment session.
Calcium Hydroxylapatite Filler & Biostimulator
Radiesse®
Immediate Correction + Biostimulation
Radiesse is an injectable treatment made with calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA). Unlike Sculptra, Radiesse can provide immediate correction from the injectable product while also stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.
This allows Radiesse to function as both a dermal filler and a biostimulator.
Depending on how it is used, Radiesse may be selected for structural support, volume restoration or biostimulatory treatment.
Radiesse provides both immediate correction and a biostimulatory effect that develops over time — making it distinct from both traditional HA fillers and PLLA biostimulators like Sculptra.

You don't need to choose between Sculptra and Radiesse before your consultation.
Your provider will evaluate your facial anatomy, skin quality, areas of volume change and aesthetic goals to determine whether Sculptra, Radiesse, another injectable treatment or a combination approach is most appropriate.
Understanding the Difference
Biostimulators vs. Traditional Dermal Fillers
Traditional dermal fillers and biostimulators can both play a role in facial rejuvenation, but they do not necessarily accomplish the same thing.
Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as products within the JUVÉDERM® family, primarily use injectable gel to add or restore volume.
Biostimulators encourage the body to produce collagen, creating changes that develop through a biological response over time.
Radiesse is somewhat unique because it can provide immediate correction while also acting as a biostimulator. Sculptra is primarily used for its collagen-stimulating effect and produces changes progressively.
For some patients, the best treatment plan may involve traditional filler. For others, a biostimulator may be more appropriate. Some patients may benefit from a combination approach.
Learn About Dermal FillersHyaluronic acid fillers (e.g., JUVÉDERM®)
Add or restore volume using injectable gel. Immediate effect. Primary mechanism is the filler material itself.
Sculptra® (PLLA Biostimulator)
Stimulate the body's collagen production. Effect develops gradually. Not primarily a volumizing filler.
Radiesse® (CaHA Filler + Biostimulator)
Provides immediate correction while also stimulating collagen and elastin. A bridge between traditional filler and biostimulation.
The Science Behind It
Why Does Collagen Matter?
Collagen is one of the primary structural proteins within the skin and connective tissues. It helps support the skin's strength and structure.
Collagen production changes as we age, contributing to visible changes in facial support, skin quality and volume.
Biostimulatory treatments are designed to encourage the body to produce additional collagen rather than relying exclusively on injected volume — making them an appealing option for patients interested in a gradual approach to facial rejuvenation.
Are Biostimulators Right for Me?
Biostimulatory treatments may be worth discussing if you are beginning to notice age-related changes in facial volume, support or skin quality and are interested in a treatment that works by stimulating your body's collagen production.
They may be particularly appealing if you:
- Prefer gradual, natural-looking changes
- Experiencing age-related facial volume changes
- Interested in collagen stimulation
- Want alternatives or complements to traditional filler
- Prefer an individualized, long-term approach
- Noticing changes in facial support or skin quality
A consultation is the best way to determine which option fits your anatomy and goals.
Our Philosophy
Rejuvenation That Still Looks Like You
Our goal isn't to make you look like someone else. At Treasure Valley Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa, injectable treatments are planned around the entire face, taking into account proportion, anatomy, volume distribution, skin quality and the changes that occur with aging.
Biostimulators can be particularly attractive to patients who value gradual improvement. Instead of approaching facial rejuvenation as simply "adding more filler," we evaluate what is contributing to the changes you're seeing and recommend treatment accordingly.
The goal is a refreshed, balanced and natural-looking result.
The Treatment
What Is Biostimulator Treatment Like?
Biostimulator treatments are performed in the office. Before treatment, your provider will evaluate your anatomy and discuss the areas being treated, the product being used and what you can realistically expect.
Patients may experience temporary:
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Redness
- Tenderness
- Firmness or sensitivity around injection sites
Results
When Do Biostimulator Results Appear?
Biostimulators aren't designed to behave exactly like traditional fillers.
Sculptra®
Sculptra's aesthetic effect develops gradually as collagen production is stimulated. Patients should not expect their final result immediately following treatment.
Radiesse®
When used as a filler, patients may see immediate correction. Its biostimulatory effects develop over time as collagen and elastin production is stimulated.
Treatment Planning
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
There is no universal treatment plan for biostimulators. The number of treatments depends on factors including:
Sculptra commonly involves a series. Radiesse plans vary based on the treatment objective.
