BBL vs. MOXI vs. HALO TRIBRID: Which Skin Treatment Is Right for You?

BBL targets color. MOXI refreshes and brightens. HALO TRIBRID provides the most comprehensive resurfacing and correction. Here's how to decide which treatment may be right for you.

If you're considering a laser or light-based treatment for brighter, smoother, healthier-looking skin, you've probably come across three popular names: BBL®, MOXI®, and HALO® TRIBRID™.

All three treatments can improve the appearance of your skin, but they work differently—and the best choice depends on what you're hoping to correct, how much downtime you're comfortable with, and how aggressive you want your treatment to be. At Treasure Valley Medical Spa in Meridian, we offer all three treatments for patients from Boise and across the Treasure Valley.

BBL targets color. MOXI refreshes and brightens. HALO TRIBRID provides the most comprehensive resurfacing and correction.

Here's how to decide which treatment may be right for you. Sometimes, the best answer isn't choosing just one.

It's Not About Choosing the "Best" Laser

Patients often ask us:

"Which laser is the best?"

The better question is:

"Which treatment is best for my skin?"

Someone in their 30s with mild pigmentation who wants virtually no interruption to their schedule has very different needs from someone in their 50s or 60s who wants to address years of sun damage, wrinkles and textural changes.

That's why we don't believe in choosing a treatment simply because it's the newest or most aggressive option.

We evaluate your:

  • Skin type
  • Pigmentation
  • Redness and vascular concerns
  • Texture
  • Sun damage
  • Scarring
  • Signs of aging
  • Previous treatments
  • Desired results
  • Available downtime

From there, we can recommend BBL, MOXI, HALO TRIBRID—or a customized combination of treatments—to create a plan specifically for your skin.

We begin your personalized consultation by assessing your skin and using the AURA 3D Imaging System before creating your treatment plan.

Treatment intensity and downtime vary depending on settings, treatment area and the individualized treatment plan.

BBL: Best for Brown Spots, Redness and Uneven Skin Tone

BBL, or BroadBand Light, is technically a light-based treatment rather than a laser. We use BBL HEROic, Sciton's next-generation BroadBand Light technology. It uses targeted wavelengths of light to address unwanted pigment and vascular concerns in the skin.

BBL is an excellent option if your primary concerns are:

  • Sun damage
  • Brown spots and age spots
  • Freckles
  • Facial redness
  • Rosacea
  • Small visible blood vessels
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Dull complexion
  • Active acne

One of the biggest advantages of BBL is that it can produce meaningful improvement with little to no downtime. Depending on what we're treating, pigmented spots may temporarily darken before gradually fading or flaking away.

This treatment can be used on many areas of the body, including the face, neck, chest, arms and legs.

BBL can also be customized for acne. Forever Clear BBL® uses different wavelengths of light to target acne-causing bacteria, reduce inflammation and redness, and support clearer-looking skin.

Who is BBL best for?

BBL may be your best starting point if you look in the mirror and primarily notice reds and browns—sun spots, freckles, redness, rosacea or uneven pigmentation—rather than significant textural changes.

It's also a great choice for someone who wants visible skin improvement without planning for several days of social downtime.

MOXI: The "Prejuvenation," Anti-Aging and Maintenance Laser

MOXI is a gentle, non-ablative fractional laser that uses a 1927 nm wavelength to create microscopic treatment zones in the skin while leaving surrounding tissue intact.

It is designed to improve:

  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Mild sun damage
  • Dull skin
  • Uneven tone
  • Early signs of aging
  • Mild textural irregularities
  • Overall skin quality and luminosity

MOXI is particularly popular with patients who aren't necessarily trying to reverse significant aging yet—they want to maintain great skin and stay ahead of it.

That's why you'll often hear MOXI referred to as a "prejuvenation" or "anti-aging" treatment.

It can also be a great option for patients who want improvement but aren't ready for the additional downtime associated with more aggressive resurfacing.

After MOXI, the skin may be pink or red and then develop a dry, sandpaper-like texture as microscopic treated areas called MENDs (microscopic epidermal necrotic debris) rise to the surface. These typically shed over the following several days.

The total downtime for this laser is 2–5 days, and you can start wearing makeup or tinted sunscreen the day after treatment.

Who is MOXI best for?

Think MOXI if your goal is:

"My skin is pretty good—I just want it brighter, smoother and more even."

MOXI also works beautifully as a maintenance treatment after more corrective procedures.

HALO TRIBRID: When You Want to Take Skin Correction to the Next Level

HALO TRIBRID is the most comprehensive resurfacing option of the three.

Unlike treatments that rely on a single wavelength, HALO TRIBRID combines three independently controlled wavelengths—2940 nm, 1927 nm and 1470 nm—in one treatment.

Each wavelength has a different job.

2940 nm: Surface Refinement

The 2940 nm erbium (Er:YAG) wavelength provides controlled superficial ablation to improve surface texture and visible imperfections.

Think:

Smoother skin + refined texture.

1927 nm: Pigment and Brightening

The 1927 nm wavelength targets superficial pigmentation and helps improve luminosity and uneven tone.

Think:

Brighter, clearer skin.

1470 nm: Deeper Dermal Renewal

The 1470 nm wavelength reaches deeper into the skin to stimulate dermal remodeling and collagen production and improve deeper textural concerns.

Think:

Collagen remodeling + deeper rejuvenation.

By combining all three, HALO TRIBRID can address multiple layers of the skin during a single treatment.

It may be an excellent option for:

  • Moderate to significant sun damage
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Rough texture
  • Enlarged-looking pores
  • Acne scars
  • Other scars
  • More established signs of aging
  • Patients wanting more noticeable correction

Most patients should expect more downtime with HALO TRIBRID than with BBL or a lighter MOXI treatment. Redness, swelling, bronzing and a rough or peeling texture can occur as the skin renews.

The downtime for this treatment is 7–10 days, depending on your customized treatment settings.

Who is HALO TRIBRID best for?

Think HALO TRIBRID if you're saying:

"If I'm going to have a treatment, I want to make it count."

It's especially appealing for patients who have several concerns at once—for example, sun damage plus fine lines plus rough texture and enlarged pores.

So Which Treatment Should You Choose?

But sometimes the answer isn't choosing just one.

What About Combining BBL + MOXI?

This is one of our favorite combinations for patients who have both visible pigmentation and overall tone or texture concerns.

BBL targets specific reds and browns while MOXI provides fractional resurfacing to improve overall tone, pigment and skin quality.

For the right patient, combining the two allows us to address different concerns during the same overall treatment plan.

This combination can be especially appealing for patients with sun damage who want more correction than BBL alone but aren't ready for a more intensive resurfacing treatment.

What About BBL + HALO TRIBRID?

For patients with significant photodamage, redness, pigmentation and textural aging, we may recommend combining technologies rather than expecting one device to do everything.

BBL can address targeted vascular and pigmented concerns while HALO TRIBRID focuses on resurfacing and renewal at multiple depths.

The result is a highly customized treatment designed around what your skin actually needs.
